The cost of buying bottles in my area are almost twice the cost of the Smith outfit I bought today. Am I getting ripped? Is there a way to get a discount? I am real bummed to spend $370 on 2 full bottles. These are not the large sized 5 foot industrials.

That's about what I was quoted for a #4 acetylene and a K oxygen.
I waited until I could find a used set. They were $100 each IIRC.

I started out renting my three bottles (one for MIG). $5.00 month each, no lease. Then, as I came across "legal" bottles (ones that my LWS would accept for exchange), I phased them out of rental as I used up the gas in each.
I got one bottle, a 150 cf. beauty, at a yard sale for $35.00, it was a CO2 bottle, but my shop allowed me to exchange it for the O2 of theirs that I already had, making that oine mine ( and got paperwork to that effect). I then came across three as part of an O2/Act rig I bought at another sale for $150.00. Sold one of the 3 for $80.00, and swapped the other two for the two I had on rental.
...so the moral of the story is...check into renting your cylinders , make sure there is no lease ( you just surrender the gas if you turn them in). My deal would also allow me to go up or down on size at any fillup, jut buy the gas.
The shops are real serious about ownership, however. Most of them have had bad seed not pay their rental bills, then sell the tanks (that still belonged to the shop). My local shop is a Ma and Pa, very friendly little place.

I wish I had a small shop here in Durham :( Rental is $80 per year per bottle. They only rent the largest size.

Never heard of Hotfoot. Prices here seem very high with dealers not wanting to refill a bottle that is not theirs.

Oh Snap! Must be the drugs! Now I see! The store owners just didn't want you to buy the cylinders. Friends don't let friends drink and weld. :)

No Respect! I pay 13.75 a month for the rental on my O/A tanks, and about 60ish a year for the C25 for the Mig. I really think that the LWS is screwing me on the O/A tanks. I tried to have them bill me annually, but they wouldn't do it because I am on a "cash only" account. When I empty my tanks the next time, I'm going to go to the other LWS and get the 400 dollar deposit on my current O/A tanks back. The other LWS doesn't charge you for deposit, and they will let me rent a Kox and a 145cuft Acetylene for around 60/year. Much better deal, no? I hate getting nickel and dimed. I know those guys are trying to make a living as well, but they have pissed me off too many times, so I am going to take my business elsewhere.
