Does anyone know what kind of paint this guy used? He told me transparent car paint, but I can't find anything like this. Any input would be great.
thank you!

I suspect that the fish has color added to the steel and then it was sprayed with automotive "clear Coat" you can get that from almost any automotive supply store. I use metal finishes from these people http://www.metalfinishesplus.com/
but there are a lot of others to choose from.

I don't know about that Jim. I think it'd be hard to get color that consistent with such a defined line down the middle. I think it was applied afterward.

Thank you for the options. I have to do some checking on them, but do you know if they are transparent? You guys have all the answers! Thank you!

not sure, but maybe it is "clear acrylic sealer". i bought a spray can of it at A.C. Moore for $5, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. i believe others on this forum have used this to put a finish on one of their metal art projects.
later...

You sand the Fish after you get the color you want and this will give you a defined Line:)

It appears that all of you might be right. I've found at least three companies that offer the candy colors. They are transparent and with Auto Air colors, you can mix them with the sparklescent colors and get a little sparkle in the candy colors. I'm betting that's what he's used. Thank you all for your advise! Once again, you knew the answers.
Thank you!

You can get candies in spray bombs at Wal Mart or Auto Parts Store...some are "wheel paits" or "chrome paints", but basically are just transparent candies. All are meant to be used over a "silvery" base (chrome, etc., but steel prepped with a flap disc would do as well). Do not spray more than one coat, or they will lose their transparency.:)

Wow, really? Thanks, Hotfoot! I love the candies! I have tried the purple candy on a scrolling heart that I made for my mom for mothers day. It's stunning. I flap disced the heart with a swirl finish and it looks great thru the purple. I'll post it as soon as I have a clear coat on it. Thanks for the info!

You can clear it if you want, but it isn't really required.

I used the Auto Air purple candy on the hearts for my mom and they are water based. They do require a clear coat or they wash off very easily. They came out great! I'll post pics today.

So, here are the pics of the hearts for my mom for mothers day. The smaller heart is actually lavender with a great sparkle, but it won't show very well in the pics. The purple candy on the larger heart is awsome. I love the effect. Thank you all for your advise!

Yeah, this was done with Auto Air Candy Purple. I also have a fish that I intend on painting with their Flair Teal-Purple as soon as the color comes in. This is definitely the direction I'd like to go in. The transparent colors over the swirl finish looks great and gives each piece great dimension. I'd love to get the Flair Teal-Purple to be transparent, but I think it's going to be solid in order for the color to really shift. We'll see. I'll keep you informed. Thanks, again, for all of the advise everyone!

will that hold up to weather using it over the metal without primer ?

I have the Auto Air primer that doesn't actually color the stainless steel with the swirl finish on it. So, you can still see the swirl. After the million coats needed to get the depth of color I use an actual automotive clear coat with hardner. The swirl and the candy colors just fly off the metal. You can see that in the dark purple heart shown on this post. The candies are water based, though. So, without the clear coat, it just washes off.

Here's an apple I made my sons teacher for her end of the year gift. I used the brite red candy and emerald candy for the leaf. It's beautiful! These candies are amazing.
