I want a basic AD hood, a cheapie would do fine as I want it for very occasional use on the road, whats the best bargain hood. It took some while to get used to but now I am spoiled. I use a regular one the other day and find the new ones so far superior but don't want to have to remember the one in the shop when I skip out to do a small portable job.

I not sure how cheap you are wanting to go, but one of the guys that helps me part time has one of the Harbor Freight hoods, he has had it for about 2 yrs. and it seems to work well. Also I think the Miller & Jasckson hoods are realy good. Miller has its Hobbie line with a fixed shade and if you don't mind the small view area you can get one from Cyberweld for $94.00

i just bought one from northern tools, for $50 and I think it is just as good as the $250 miller I use at work. I highly recomend the northern one.

The basic Hobart hood like the FFA on at the top right of the screen works pretty good. You can find it in basic black for a decent price.

Cary,
The Northern Tool hood is about the best $ value right now. Prices for low-end hats got higher recently (like everything else!), and $80's too much to pay for an Astro-Pneumatic!

HEY! HOW COME NOBODY'S FLOGGING CARY FOR NOT SEARCHING OUT HIS ANSWER??? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D (Apparently, I can't fill a line with smiles. Limited to 10. :( Had to delete one more for that frown.)
Cary, if I hadn't splurged on the Satellite, I'd probably still be using my HF hood. It still works great. I think I saw them at HF this week for $39.99. Nice thing about it is that I don't mind dropping it or tossing it in the back of the truck. (Then again, I do the same thing with my Satellite now that the 'new' has worn off.)
Sorry for bustin' your chops.

With over 8,700 posts, I think that Cary just wanted to get some conversation going. :D Anybody with that many surely knows how to do a search!!!!;)
Besides, he's been busy planting lately so not much time to search here.

Yeah. I guess we can cut him some slack. :)
I really don't care if people choose to search first or not. Even when a question has been asked 5000 times, each new discussion seems to turn up something, or at least be entertaining. And besides, if I don't want to join in a discussion, I just don't click on it.

I thought about the search after I posted but figured I would get the dirt in a hurry this way. I remember good things about the HF hood for the most part and I don't mind fixed shade for what its for, simple stick stuff on occasion without stripping my shop, to carry in the trunk most of the time.

I usually dont look here much, I pretty much fly thru the general, the MIG and the stick threads.

I use the HF AD hood, and I am very surprised at how good it works!! They have two models locally here in CA: a regular basic black and some kind of skull thing for 10.00 more - I have the black for a number of reasons, but I'm sure they both work well.
I would like to `try` a higher end Miller or SpeedGlas one just to see the difference, or lack thereof, but like was said earlier, I LOVE the fact that I'm not really afraid to abuse my helmet. It gets banged around just like anything else I own (off-roader), and is no worse for the wear!
I think I paid around 60.00 for it, WITH an extended warranty (can't remember how long, 2 years seems about right).
