For some time now, my gas driven Hobart champion 16 has not been running right. At fast speed, the engine would surge fast, slow, fast, slow and at idle speed it would slow down so much it would almost stop. Mangelweld got intouch with me and told me about his machine and how he was able to fix it ( ruptured diaphram ). Well, I checked my carb and the diaphram was ok. A mechanic said it might be a dirty idle jet or it could be SUCKING AIR ! Nah, couldn't be that easy. While the machine was running at fast speed, I thought I'd check the fuel line from tank to carb. Guess what ? the fuel line coming from the tank to the fuel filter had waddled out on the intake nipple of the filter and LITTLE bubbles of air were being sucked into fuel line. Changed the fuel line, put on a new filter and presto, a new running engine.
Thought I'd just pass on this info.:D
