I bought this "Hobart Hood" a couple of years ago at a car show, took it home and charged it in the sun, but never used it. ( Just got around to taking a welding course) How do I know if it's working right or not? I look thru it it's green, hold it up to the sun it's green, but if I have it outside it flicks dark for a split second every few seconds. As far as I can see it's just a solar activated one, no battery, just a solar strip across the top of the plate. Inside it says Shade fixed #10, and on the plate it says Hobart Hood / Weld-it #2.5 / 10 . What have I got here!? Thanks!

It being a Hobart, I would just try to strike an arc and see if it goes dark. The lens will block out the harmful UV and IR light even if it doesn't darken, worst that will happen if it don't work is you will have that bright spot like getting flashed with a camera for a few minutes.

Welcome aboard, Topster.

You have one of the inexpensive, fixed-shade hats that are still widely available.

An easy test of the auto-dark feature is to strike a cigarette lighter in front of the lens. If it darkens, all's well.

You may need to put the hat in a sunny or incandescent lighted spot for a few minutes if it has not been used for awhile.

Food for thought...if it's solar it still has a battery .Just replace the battery and you'll be good to go .
