I asked a question on my first thread and notice that the envelpoe on the left hand side has an arrow on it and I don't know exactly what this means or how to get into it. Can someone help me with navigation of this wonderful and very useful site?

The envelope w/arrow just means you've made a post (or more) in that thread. Click on the thread title to open it.

Ironic thing is that if he doesn't know how to open the thread, he's not going to see the reply.

I thank the others that helped me with this simple problem that was anserwed easly, but you my friend are a senior member and it suprises me that you are such a smart ***. I find the ironic thing is that you are on forum that is suppose to help others and you have no help for the new. Why don't you chew on that for awhile and respond like a senior member ought to. I hope you don't live your life like you have showed us today. And one more thing, in the future you should respond to me, or anyone else, in the first person. You act as if I'm not in the room. Grow up!!

Hold on there, trep.
His reply only came across that way to you. I think you are reading into it too much - it was not meant to be a stab at you.
Chill out.

Thanks, Scott. Wow! Uh, Trep, who wizzed in your Wheaties? Smart Alec? Me? Yep. Sorry you were offended by my remark. But isn't it true that if you honestly don't know how to open the thread to read it, that you won't see the response that Bluesparks posted?

Hey, Trep: I didn't read it that way either! So, are you able to navigate it a bit better yet? Its been my observation that every forum has its own quirks, but once you figure this one out, You'll find it quite a valuable resource. Welcome aboard!:)

All is taken care of, as you can see. And from what you are saying here you have mistaken my original question. I simply did not know what the icon on the left of the thread meant and I must know everything about everything. That's what makes me one of the top welders and fabricators in the south east. I love to compete with you sometime. My shop is in central Florida, where is yours?

Welcome to the forum Trep,
Lots of good people on here. Whateg0 is very knowledgeable and is one of the more even-handed guys around. He was just trying to make a point about the Catch-22 irony that he saw in your original post. Dave and just about everybody else will be more than glad to help out so don't be shy about asking away. One of the things about forums is we cannot read the body language, we can't hear the tone of voice, we cannot watch the eye movement. Those are all clues as to whether a statement is a slight, a probe, sarcastic, well-meant, etc. So one has to kind of factor those in when reading the questions and the answers. Just a couple of hints. Again, welcome. We like to have fun here too.

Hey, that's pretty interesting. I never paid any attention to the little envelope icon thingies. In general, I've found them to be just some programmer's idea of an arguably meaningful graphic representation of something vaguely related to the forum, rendered so small and in such a pastel shade as to be virtually undecipherable and completely ignorable.
trep813, if you can follow the weld puddle as well, you have a bright future. And Dave wasn't picking on you, he was responding offhand to the previous post as far as I can tell. There are other folks here who are better at picking on people :D

Welcome Trep, very few of us here are experts at computers or speechwriting. I know whateg0's comment may have come across strange, but I assure you that it was just your perception. If you look at whateg0's posts (all 2571 of them) you will see he has been very helpful to a few people here. As JimDon said, it is very hard to decipher the intent of a post sometimes by reading it on this white screen. I'm fairly new to this forum, I am one of the crappiest welders/fabricators in the southeast, and my shop is in a Toyota:D. I do know, however, that there is always a bit of good natured jabbing going on here, and I am sure it will stay that way. None of it is intended to hurt anyone's feelings.
Best wishes,
Chuck
