The young one is taking some welding classes. Thought I'd show you a couple of stick welds with 7024. Not sure if he did any flat beads prior, but here are his first and second try with a T joint on 3/16"+ stock.

First time, oops:

Second pass was a bit better; guess he had to diddle with the mental settings a bit:

Here's a 7018 with a root and two filler passes. He doesn't especially like 7018, so he's burning maybe a dozen or more rods a night to get with the program (Sorry, but he bead blasted it at the end, so it the pic came out a little shiny).

Hey Pop,
Not too shabby at all for his first tries. Then again, hanging around you, he's probably done some stuff before.
7024 is some nice running stuff that could spoil you forever. Should play with that after you've had to get good on other, not so forgiving sticks.
That 7018 looks real nice even if he did blast it clean. I too didn't like it the first couple times I played with it, but once he gets dialed in to using it, you probably won't be able to pull him away from it. I really prefer it to most anything now. Anyway, the young'un is off to a really good start.

The only good thing about using 7024 early on is that now he wants all his other stuff to look that good, heh, heh, heh. He knows he has to get good with 7018, so he's concentrating on it.

I'm not a welder, but interested in it. That's why I hang out here. I figure I'll learn something despite myself :D

The young one has apparently learned that he can do whatever he sets out to do. Best I can do.

Has he run any 6010 or 6011 yet? If he hasnt ,he is in for a suprise. Not quite as smooth as 7024 or 7018,but once you get the hang of them they are no problem to use. After the weather warms up maybe you guys can come up here one Saturday and he can weld until he hates it.:D I have plenty of metal ,rods and machines he can use.

He's done some practice with 6010 and 6011. Next week he starts TIG class, so he'll have MIG, stick and TIG courses, maybe 30 hours of class a week.

We'll have to get up and see you one of these days.
