Since this has to do with Plasma Cutters , Thought I would post it here .

Have 3 older brothers . The next one older than me , works on a large farm , lots of welding , also has his own plasma cutter in addition to his mig welder . The next older after him lives in Washington , and since he did not want to be outdone by me and other brother, He decided to go out and buy his own mig welder and a plasma cutter , ( which works for the 2 of us down here in Oregon , we don't have to fabricate stuff for him no more based upon his e-mail drawings  ) .

Anyway , Last weekend , I get a call from him . He is having problems trying to figure out how to connect the " gas " supply from the " Tank " to the Plasma cutter .

ME : " You mean the air supply line from your compressor to the Plasma cutter ? "

HIM : " Air Compressor ? "

ME : " Yea , thats were the Plasma cutter gets it air from . "

HIM : " What about the tank of CO2/ Argon gas I have ? "

ME : " Dude , thats for your welder " . Course as I am trying to say this , I am almost falling out of my computer chair as I am laughing quietly .:D

HIM : " How does the plasma cutter make plasma from air ? "

It was at that point that I almost ticked him off because I had been holding my breath laughing , but after that last sentence , I was rolling . Then explained how a plasma cutter works , which calmed him down . Asked him though if he got any instructions from the place he bought the stuff from .

HIM : " No , told them I did not need any " .

He has since called our brother down here , ( who I already told the story to ;) ) , and was asking him some questions . In the middle of that conversation brother here asked him if he got his tank hooked up to his plasma cutter yet .
Apparently the reply he received is not something I can post here .:D

He is retired , so I guess he has nothing better to do with his money , Think though that I will send him a e-mail about how cool it is to weld " WOOD " together .;)

Take Care ,

Fred H.

P.S. Now I am NOT an expert by any means , It was just his arrogance about buying something , and not knowing how it works even though he " Could " of got instructions on its operation but choose not to that really got to me . And I did tell him that using Pressurized gas is an option if no air is available .

Welcome to the forum, Fred...great story. Thanks for sharing. This is a wealth of information for all things welding...glad to have you aboard. There is no such thing as a dumb question, so ask anything, or add to the discussion with your own experience...we also have some fun, too. :D

so fred, you never told us what kind of welder and plasma cutter your brother bought. I would suggest you tell your brother to get a fire extinguisher. a big one. and welcome to the board. you might want to ask him if he bought a welding hood........never know:D

The arrogance is pretty funny, but don't discount entirely the use of compressed gases other than air for plasma cutting. I had heard quite awhile back that different gases had different characteristics which may or may not be beneficial for plasma cutting. It seems that nitrogen works very well, probably better than air since it has no moisture. And from this thread...

...it seems that Ar works for it too.

Just hope your brother doesn't read that and say, "See, told you so!"
