do you more experienced folks out there always bevel edges? I'm going to start on my cart using 1" square and want to know the general rule. I know in my stick class, we always beveled everything but that was for thick plate and big pipe.

What are you going to weld it with. John

I just bought a HH140 and a bottle of C25. Prolly use .035 wire.

I think John was asking what material you are going to be welding. Personally, if I need a full penetration weld and can't double side it, I'll bevel anything 1/8 and over. That's using the 140, C25 and .023.
FWIW too, you can dig deeper going FCAW over MIG, So if I were going to be building tank turrets, I'd go to the .035 FC, switch the polarity and no gas... I'd still bevel though.:D

sorry...yeah it's 1" square 16ga (.051?) I still have my old FC welder setup with .035 but wanted to play with my new mig unit. Are you guys recommending I use the flux core .035? I have .030 and .023 for the mig. Thanks again for all the help.

On 16ga, you don't need a bevel. Bbased on what you said you have, I'd run the .023 solid wire with the C25. Save the FC for when you really need it - that stuff is pricey.

.023 lives in my Lincoln but .030 will work too:)
Don't worry, you'll evaporate the 16g with the .023:D
Watch the joints as the ends of the Tube WILL evaporate- 16g is thin:)
Start on the Solid piece first and wash over to the Edge of the other piece.

OK, similar question. On 1 x 1 x 1/8" MS tubing, using C25 with an HH140, what wire should I go with? Size? Brand?
Based on the responses, I'd bevel for 1/8". Correct?
Thanks for these answers, guys. They really help.

Ain't that the truth... one second it's there, the next - it's a hole.

I use the .023 solid with the gas, but it really is a personal preference, .030 will work too as Ed said above. Brand again, is a personal preference, so far all I've ran is the Hobart brand the ER70S-6.
The bevel/not bevel question is really based on application. Do you need full penetration or not. Can you double side the weld or not? I've ran a lot of single side welds on non-beveled 1/8" where I didn't need full penetration. Just left a bit of a gap and got "good" penetration, but not full, but then I didn't need full.
So it's a question of application. If you were using 1/4" then yeah, bevel. But the 1/8" is more of a maybe, sometimes, depends, borderline, thickness.
