I'm building a pig cooker with a buddy and we were working on it today. Spent about 3hrs under the helmet. I always keep it on / down when either of us are welding. We were inside. Noticed this evening that my face is red and my eyes are a bit dry....am I being paranoid or is my helmet not protecting me properly? I have one of the $50 Northern Tool auto helmets.

Thanks
Dale

I don't see how the UV rays could pass through the helmet itself.

What color shirt were you wearing?

Could be reflection off of a light colored shirt???

I couldn't see how it could penetrate the helmet either. I was wearing a dark blue shop apron with my green welding jacket on top. I didn't have the top buttons buttoned I was mainly using it for the sleeves....Beth mentioned that I looked red and I agreed after looking in the mirror. We did walk around the flea market yesterday and it was a little sunny, so it could just be that. Maybe subconsciously I was looking for a reason to buy a speedglass :P

Thanks,
Dale

Hold the lid up in the light and look for light coming in around the lens.....I have read of a few having this problem...

Try taping a piece of leather across the bottom of your hood so that it hangs down about 3". That will prevent UV rays being bounced under your hood from your clothing.
