Well thanks to everyone's recommendations I ordered a HH140, and it just arrived!

I'll be welding relatively thin metal, car fenders, so I'll be using thin wire and gas shielding.

Can you confirm that this requires an Argon/CO2 mix. I believe I should be looking at a 75% Argon / 25% CO2. Is that correct?

Recommendations on the best place to buy or rent a bottle?

Thanks guys!

C25 (75%Ar/25%CO2) is what I and many others use.

As far as good places to get gas, check the phonebook and call around. You will be the one dealing with them, so see what your impression is from talking to them. If you have questions, a good LWS will be able to help you out also. There are many folks who use a LWS and others who use the service at farm supply stores, Thoroughbred. It seems that it varies a lot with location. Where are you located? This information will help; if somebody on here is in your area, they may be able to recommend or divert you away from a particular store.

if your LWS will let you buy your own tank, and swap it out, here is a place that has reasonable prices on new tanks.

Go to your local stand and pick up 2 Chorizo and Egg tacos - never fails to adequately supply me with gas. http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ruinkai/FIREdevil.gif

I'd image I'd only need a fairly small bottle - my local Praxair shop has bottles for sale starting at $88.

That seems pretty reasonable, no?

That's probably not far from normal, but I haven't priced anything smaller than 80CF. That will last quite awhile. If you have the room, it is usually worth going to the biggest size you can, to a degree. As an example, I recently priced bottles so I could upgrade from the 80 I have now or add to the 80 I have now. The 160CF was $225 +contents and a 300CF was only $25 more +contents. The fills were like $25 and $45, so you can see where bigger is sometimes better. But if you are limited in space, maybe the small bottles are right for you. Many places will let you upgrade to a bigger bottle later, deducting the price of what you currently have from the purchase price of the bigger bottle, so ask about that if you think you may want to go bigger later.

before purchasing my own 80 cf tank, I called the local LWS to see what their policy was filling customer owned tanks, I asked if I could drop off and
pick up my tank (no swapping) a couple of days later. They said that was fine, cost would be $61 for 80 cf of C25.

how does this price compare ?

Different location, so YMMV, but I paid $34+tax and hazmat for 80CF swap a few months back. I priced fills at Linweld and it should be about $25 for a 160cf and $45 if I get the 300cf.
