Picked up a new 140 Handler today. Played with the flux core sample wire for a few minutes, before deciding it was junk for my use. Hooked up the bottle, and setup for .24 Mig use. This was light weight sheet metal work. Welded for about an hour and then the circuit breaker in the garage tripped. I reset the breaker and waited a few minutes. As soon as I hit the trigger, the breaker tripped again. This is a breaker we had suspected was getting weak. So I moved to a different outlet and circuit.

This time the unit powered up fine and would weld, but when I hit the trigger, there a loud buzzing noise, kind of like a transformer? I messed with it a while and it even buzzes when set to purge and the trigger is pulled. I checked the wire pressure, it even buzzes when the feed clamp is lifted.

Since it is buzzing when set to purge, could it be the gas valve? One thing I didn't do was reverse the polarity and set it back up for flux core. When setup for flux core, is the gas valve active or disabled?

I am going to go back the farm store I bought it at and see what they say, Unfortunately it was the last one they had. Mine is a 500500, they did have some 500505's(includes cart) maybe they will just swap the unit out?

Does this second circuit you are trying to run the unit on, have other loads on the circuit besides the welder?

I tried a third circuit, same result.

The second circuit just had a 75w light bulb and a mini refrigerator.
The third just had a fluorescent light.
Both were 20 amp circuits.

Even if it were an external power supply problem, would it buzz when set on purge?

Check to see if there is any wire from the new roll poking out and making contact with the housing.

Nope, I even took the roll off.

Today I tried swapping the polarity back, no luck.

Then we hooked it directly to a proven 25 amp circuit, with nothing else even wired to the circuit and no extension cords, no luck.

I talked to a manager at the place I bought it, he said bring it back Monday morning and they will test it on a 30 amp line they have in the shop. Then call Hobart and try and get me back in business.

NFURY8 sounds like you have a shorted gas valve. to check for sure take wrapper off and pull one of the wires off the gas valve pull trigger if breaker doesnt trip youve found the problem. Call Hobart Service Tech. 1800-332-3281 with machines S/N and they will take care of you.
