Anybody got experience with these things?
I had an early post about a problem with a swing gate... and don't like the idea of a track across my driveway (not level for one thing) for one slide gate method..the cantilever deal would solve all my problems...I think, unless I'm letting myself in for further complications.

If you are talking about a gate that slides on rollers with no tracks, the only problem I have seen with them is when they are almost closed they get a little heavy on the end and get harder to roll. My friend has one at his shop that we took and mounted 2 lawnmower wheels to the bottom of the gate on the end that goes across the drive, to support the weight when almost closed, and it worked perfect then. The gate was also about 16ft opening a shorter gate may not be a problem.

We installed a cantilever gate at our Gun Club a few years ago. Mech3 is exactly right, they don't like to be all the way in our out without a support. Ours came with a couple brackets we mounted on support posts to support the cantilevered end in the fully closed or fully opened position. I think our gate is about 20' long, but approximately 4' stays in the housing. The gate itself is aluminum, so it is not too heavy.
Installing it was a snap. We put about 2/3 of a yard of concrete in a hole, made a level pad, leveled the gate housing and bolted it down with the "J" bolts we tied to the rebar. Everything mechanical is self contained. All we had to do was hook up the power, control wiring (we have a card access system) and proximity sensors that we buried on each side of the gate. Works like a charm.
We went with this style of gate based on the recommendation of a club member who owns a commercial security company. He has installed about every type of gate made, and his experience is that the cantilever sliding gate is the most trouble free, by far.

We purchased our gate through the club member that does this for a living, so we got it at his cost, and we installed it under his supervision.
We bought the gate from ARK Automatic Gate Systems, Inc., out of VA. They delivered it to the club. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have much of a web presence.
