In this project the homeowner has a weird rear deck, with an off set stair landing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/RockyD/Stuff%20I%20built/Deck%20Gate/JennysGate35.jpg
The problem was to maximize the entrance and keep the gate square to the world, and still have it be functional...so I came up with the idea to make two gates that meet at a right angle and swing out of the way, to afford maxinum area for the deck use.

Now how to keep it closed? With a Latch Like this...

...and finally one of the hinges...simple barrel hinge...nice and tidy.

Not sure if the inspector here would allow a gate to swing out over the steps like that. Seem to recall a door needing a platform so you could stand at that level, but it's been a while.

Pretty close, Creep...the HO is a client and those are our dogs they have...they bought 4 from us.... the first two lived to a ripe old age, then passed on....they had a good life, so we placed two more with these folks.
Rocket, you're right, of course about the out swinging gate, but I didn't have much choice on this one. I would have preferred to have the gate swing both ways, but it just wouldn't work. The deck is barely 4 feet on the one side.
Also you carpenters out there will notice the shoddy fits on the deck...spacers, in the floor...the angle cut on the hand rail, etc. I can't imagine any one on here that would do a job like that.
I hope you found the slider at the bottom of the post...the pictures are bigger than shown....at least on my browser.

Rocky very nice gate, I actually have a situation like that here. The deck at my place is pretty high so lots of stairs. My kids are grown and the yard is fenced so the dog can go up and down as she pleases but now the nephew's daughter is walking and due to other youngsters coming around here and there you gave me a great idea for a winter project.I saw the fence project you did with the ez and I wonder did you use it here also?;)

I use my 125EZ on galvanized stuff, mainly...I used the HH140 MIG setup on this gate, because it was not gavl'd.

Rocky why the ez on galvanized just curious. Thanks for putting up with all the ez questions.I am going to get one ,you and Dan convinced me. It might be a little bit though because the best place is about 30 miles away and I might not be there for awhile.
Nice creative design. I like it. Your craftmanship is a goal for all of us; as usual.
There may be a future job if the 'not so great' carpentry warps/shifts or Calif earthquakes realign things. Seems like the latch alignment is not too forgiving or adjustable.
Geeezzee!! I feel like I am tugging on Superman's Cape.

Fluxcore work best for galvanized, and the EZ is super portable.

EZ is fluxcore only and fluxcore works better welding galvanized steel.

Sometimes, they are, but I would recommend to gap it enough to get a weld on both sides....mine are welded both.

What materials did you use for the barrel hinges? I have given up finding the right size tube and bolt configuration:(
I may just buy the ones out of McMaster Carr

Most metal yards here have ornamental stuff, hinges, finials, wrought iron and related hardware. They're only a buck or two.
