I have read a thread by Hotfoot that it's a pain to clean an acetylene tank and they don't recommend it. You have to be careful too because it contains asbestos from what they say. It's harmful to your health.

I've never even attempted to work with an acetylene tank and don't think I ever will. Just too much hassle and too much danger. I have found that an ad in the paper or on Craig's List can bring in a lot of offers for old tanks. I get scuba, medical O2, welding gas tanks, CO2 fire extingishers that way. They all work well and are much easier and safer to work with.

You're lucky the darn thing didn't catch a spark,
and make a really big 'WHOOSH'!! or 'BOOM'!!

...and I won't touch one, normally. The one I came by was already torch cut 20 or 30 years ago. I was going to air hammer the concrete stuff out until I started in and saw all the asbestos floating around. I capped it off with concrete (encapsulated the asbestos), then made "Guiseppe" the concertina player from it and some bulldozer scoop teeth. he now is in a gallery awaiting his new home!:)
