When tigging SS to Regular steel I have always used 308 or 304L for the filler material. Does anyone know if this would be a problem when joining two pieces of regular steel? I dont want to buy a tube of steel filler rod if I dont need to.

309 is usually the best filler to use for joining SS to mild. In situations where ultimate strength is not an issue, I think it would be okay to use 308 for joining mild to mild. I've done it a few times. It flows really nice.

In welding school all the instructor ever gave us to weld MS with was SS rods. It was 309 SS rods. I aways wondered why he did not used MS rods and he said you can weld better and make the welds look nicer with the SS rods. I do agree they wet out differently, but I dont like that. I think useing SS rods on MS is a waste of Money. MS rods are Alot cheaper.

I had to certify in 3/8" 304 dissimilar to steel and had to use 308L. It was a military cert...309 is also a good rod to use, but I would think that having some mild steel rod around would be beneficial. For example:
