I am starting to do metal art. My first project will use old metal chromed golf club shafts with the irons and drivers attached. Will welding these put off toxic fumes? They will only be tack welded. Any information about welding this type of steel will be appreciated. Some art will use the iron's and shafts, some will be cut off at the driver so I can use just the shafts. I get these free or almost free so I'd like to use them as material.

Several potential problems: fumes from the chrome plate, fumes and contamination from INSIDE the shaft, weld comtamination from the chrome, unknown base alloy can be a problem.

With cleaning and proper fume control (ventilation, extraction, and/or breather) shouldn't be a major issue.
